Rose’s Pyramid

2 day workshop for beginners.

Description: The exterior of the beautiful little pyramid is decorated with wisteria, grapes, lilacs and fuchsia. Mother of pearl, Swarovski crystals, brass charms, and glass beads add interest to the panels. Open the sides to reveal a lovely rose housed in the finished interior.

The rose that inspired this piece is Rosa Mundi. Rosa Mundi was mentioned in a text from 1581 making it the earliest striped rose. I matched the colors and the shape of the rose growing in my garden to reproduce it as exactly as possible. It sits on antique white silk surrounded by crystal dewdrops. A tiny ladybug adds interesting detail to the design.

The finished piece is a pyramid with four sides. Each side is three inches tall with a base of three inches. The sides open to reveal Rosa Mundi in the finished interior. The exterior sides are embroidered silk. The interiors of the sides are finished and may be used to store needles.

Techniques: The techniques emphasized in the class are the use of wire to create detached elements, slips, padding, and realistic shading. The stitches utilized are the Backstitch, blanket stitch, bullion, couching, French knots, feather, fly, detached chain stitch, long and short, Needleweaving bar, pistil, satin, spider web stitch, stem, slanted stem, whipped stem, turkey work.

An Embroiderers Notebook

2 day workshop for advanced intermediate.

Description: One of the very important tools in a basic sewing kit is a notebook. We need it to take notes during class and to make notes while completing a project. I have designed a beautiful cover for a small notebook that is the perfect size for a sewing basket. A lovely autumn scene that includes two chickadees, a house wren and a rabbit dominates the front of the notebook.

Open the cover and you will find a small notebook and pen. The interior front panel is decorated with a band sampler of favorite embroidery stitches. The area under the notebook may contain personal information and the back of the book has space for an initial.

Please bring a basic sewing kit to class.

Techniques: The two-day class will concentrate on the rabbit and birds that dominate the design on the cover of the book. I have decorated all of the exterior and interior sides of the book cover with embroidery, but I used very simple stitches that are repeated. This allows me to concentrate class time on the stumpwork.

Emphasis will be placed on the use of padding for the birds and rabbit, soft-sided slips, silk shading, my method for creating the realistic markings on the birds and the finishing techniques used to create the book.

The stitches used in the design include backstitch, blanket stitch, cross stitch over one thread, French knots, Montenegrin Stitch, Couching, long and short, stem, whipped stem, raised stem, turkey work, Diagonal Rice Stitch, Smyrna Cross Stitch, Arrowhead Stitch, Double Running Stitch.
